In addition to this sharp drop, for the first time a majority of Americans say that the President is not honest and trustworthy, albeit by a slim 51-49 margin. According to the internals of the poll, a large source of this drop comes from those under 30, where Obama saw a 17 point decrease in approval.
The approval numbers in this poll mirror others such as a Gallup and Rasmussen. However, the disapproval numbers are significantly higher than in other polls. This mainly due to the fact that the other polls included a “Not sure” option while CNN did not. There are pros and cons to including such an option, and I think best course is to focus on the approval level and take the disapproval with a grain of salt.
It seems that the recent string of scandals have really hurt Obama with younger voters. Of all the generations, they are most likely to feeling strongly about government surveillance of online activity. Back in 2008, there was a hope that Obama would be a different type of leader, and that he would move away from the Bush era expansion of the surveillance state. But alas, that was not the case.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
