“Tianhe-2, a supercomputer developed by China’s National University of Defense Technology, is the world’s new No. 1 system with a performance of 33.86 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark, according to the 41st edition of the twice-yearly TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. The list was announced June 17 during the opening session of the 2013 International Supercomputing Conference in Leipzig, Germany.”
One thing that fascinates me is the rate at which computer technology is improving. The Tianhe-2 had almost twice the performance of the last record holder, the American-made Titan, which reached 17.59 petaflops. It is nearly 30 times as fast as Jaguar, which was the fastest computer just three years ago and is 300 times faster than the 2003 record holder.
Its simply mind-boggling to imagine what computers will be like ten years from now and what we’ll be able to achieve with them. The future is looking very bright indeed.
