This amazing video is coming from Turkey, where tens of thousands of protesters have been clashing within government security forces for the past few days.
The unrest was triggered by the controversial development of Gezi Park in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city. But what started out as a demonstration to protect the park quickly escalated as thousands of young Turks took to the streets against what they see as an authoritarian and repressive government.
This still hasn’t got a lot of press outside of Turkey, but I’m sure we’ll be hearing more in the coming days and it will be very interesting to see where it goes. Turkey is a candidate for entry into the European Union, and it is one of the cities bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will be voted on next month. You’d think that the last thing the Turkish government wants is to look bad while the eyes of the world are watching. But so far Prime Minister Erdogan remains defiant, saying “If you bring 100,000, I’ll bring out a million,” while the mayor of Ankara boasted on Twitter “We could drown u in a spoon of water but luckily for u we believe in democracy.”
Attitudes like that don’t bode well for Turkey and its standing in the international community.
