Anthony Weiner launches bid to become NYC mayor

From NBC News:

“Anthony Weiner, whose career as a congressman collapsed after he posted sexually suggestive pictures of himself on Twitter, has announced that he’s running for mayor of New York City.

“I made some big mistakes and I know I let a lot of people down. But I’ve also learned some tough lessons,” the Democrat said in a video posted on his website late on Tuesday.”

As a life-long New York area resident, I’ve been paying close attention to this year’s mayoral race. After three terms of Bloomberg, I’m not really sure what New York needs from its next mayor. On the Democratic side Christine Quinn is the front runner and could be New York’s first openly gay Mayor, while John Lhota looks like a sure bet for the GOP nomination.

So where does Weiner fit in? It’s tough to say. I think New Yorkers can forgive him for what he did, and he was pretty popular before he started taking pictures of his junk. But the real question is if there is any room for him in the Democratic primary. If Quinn is unable to consolidate her lead, there may very well be an opening for Weiner.

In any case, I’m looking forward to all the Weiner-related puns to come.

  1. Lhota is a big phoney because Giuliani endorsed Omert while Damato endorsed Netanyahu. And the Long borthers are equally phoney because they didn’t endorse GIuliani for Mayor or even for Senator for holding the exact same positions.
